Yellow Breeches, 6/5/22

I met up with Mike and his son Drew for a morning lesson on fly fishing. Mike had told me Drew was bored on just sitting around and waiting for a fish to bite so he thought fly fishing would be of more interested to him. We started at 8AM and fished to 11:30. The breeches was clear and caddis were hatching. The water was clear and 63 degrees. Both Mike and Drew have never had a fly rod in their hands. I started with casting lesson and then we hit the stream for about 90 minutes. Then I showed them entomology and how to pick the correct patterns from the fly box, both nymphs and dry flies. While on the stream we worked on both nymphing and dry fly techniques. It was a promising morning. For the time on the water with a fly rod, 5 missed and lost trout was a great experience for both. As Mike told me, “This was what he exactly wanted for his son”. We all had a good time and welcome them both to fly fishing.
