Yellow Breeches, 09/22/23

Dave showed up at Persision Fly and Tackle 7:40AM and we were on the water by 8AM. Dave had done some lake fly fishing, but the stream stuff was all new. It was a beautiful fall morning. It was 53 and sunny. It warmed to 68 degrees and the wind started to set in with the storm coming. The water was clear, 62 degrees and OK flow. As the day went on we saw fall BWO’s, midges and some caddis hatching. I set Dave up with my Orvis outfit and we hit the stream. Dave casted very well however, I did tweak how to land dry flies on the water. As he worked on that, he missed three small browns. He had tons of questions so I said, “ Let’s let the sun get up and the air warm up. The stream will come to us.” We then talked about leader designs and entomology. I showed him the insects and how to match with proper fly patterns. We then went back to the stream and Dave missed a few more. I said, “ don’t worry we all miss, the hook-set comes with more stream time.” Plus I was still teaching him casting techniques that he had never done before. Then Dave got on a roll. He landed a bunch of browns. He also got into a really big rainbow that got off. That trout was pushing 20 inches. We had a great time! A lot of hunting stories, great stream companion and another friendship. Already a 2024 spring trip in the making with Dave.

Fall fishing is on fire. The trout are on a hard bite for two reasons. The water is cool and they are feeding to get ready for spawing. I still have dates, so check your calendar and hope you can get out with me.
