Falling Springs, 08/30/24
Only the second time this year I had someone want to fish the upper Falling Springs with me. It’s literally where I learned to fly fish. Phil and Rich wanted to fish the trico hatch. We had to move a previous date due to rain. Well, it did not look much better as we hit the stream at 8AM and fished to noon. It was very overcast and breezy. However it was 72 degrees and still humid. The water was clear and 53 degrees. Both were very accomplished fly fisherman. So nothing really to deal with but a tough little spring creek. We started with terrestrials, but by 9AM the tricos started to make trout rise. So we switched right over to tricos off SA 6.5 Absolute Trout tippets. Rich had already landed and missed another on a cricket. The tricos spinnerfall was light with the breeze, but still they landed 7 rainbows and miss just as many. They were both very happy to see the stream and despite changes it still holds plenty of trout. The trout are just not easy to catch these days, but that is “Spring Creek fishing”.
