Conococheague 4/2/22

The first day of trout season. I’m not excited to deal with the crowds, but I still go out because of Fisher’s and tradition. However this year, I was very excited because Fisher asked if it was OK to bring a friend who has never trout fished. Absolutely I said!! So Saturday morning we were on the water at 6AM waiting for 8Am to roll around. The night before I had Fisher’s friend “Judge” flipping a fly rod and told him what he would be using. I had Judge set up with some bait, while Fisher and I would be using flies. Bait off a fly rod is pretty much how we all started and I figured trout would be hitting bait harder. Well, that was not the case. The water was stained and 42 degrees. The drop in water temperature put the trout off until around 11AM. There was not many people catching anything. The young men had a great morning. We ended up catching 19 rainbows. The trout we caught refused bait and we nailed them on my BH green caddis, BH Pheasant tail and Red San Juans. We went back to the house to warm back up a bit before continuing on. Fisher and Judge decided they wanted to go bass fishing. I dropped them off and I headed up for some native brook trout. I was back on the water around 2PM, and was greeted by midges and some caddis hatching. I fished a #16 Tan Caddis dry and a small #16 BH Cream Caddis. I landed 7 nice native brook trout. It was great to see the excitement on a young boy fishing a fly rod for the first time.

The streams are in fine shape and fishing well with the correct stream decisions. I have these April dates still open. April 11th, 14th, 20th, 27th, 28th and 29th. May and June are starting to fill up fast for both PA and MD guiding as well as our exclusive private water on Beaver Creek in MD.
