Antietam Creek, Maryland

I met up with Bill and his son Matt at the Beaver Creek Fly and Tackle for a half day of educational fly fishing. Bill and I were waiting on Matt so we talked things over and I decided on Antietam. Matt had never fly fished and Bill was still very new to it. We were thinking Beaver Creek but I suggested that I could teach them more over at Antietam. It was a little windy out with the front that pass over last night. It was sunny and went from 55 to 66 degrees. We fished from 9AM until 1PM. The water was clear high 50’s with midges, craneflies, tan caddis and a few sulphurs hatching. However, not a rise. I first worked on casting with both them. Then as the morning went on we worked on some nymphing techniques. While still working on improving their cast we started with the down and across nymphing, then upstream nymphing. At this point they had already missed 4 which is 100% common when learning. I ended up with high-sticking nymphing and we had two on the hook and landed a wild brown trout. It was a great morning and they plan on coming to PA to fish with me and learn about these streams.
