Antietam, 06/13/24
Brain and his son Mason met me at the farmhouse and we fished from 8AM until noon. It was cool to start, but quickly warmed to 87 degrees. The water is clear, 63 to 65 degrees. There were some Yellow Drake spinners still egg-laying and some caddis. Most of the hatches have been almost at dark. We fished with nymphs. Brian was not worried about himself. He just wanted Mason to get a big one. Brian did have 2 on and missed two more. Mason did need a casting lesson, but I saw he was able to roll cast so we went with that. Then we did a casting lesson later. Mason was close to the first one. He rolled a 20+ brown. Then finally, “Welcome to Antietam”. Mason landed a heavy 19 inch rainbow. After that he stuck another huge trout. It flew out of the water and tossed the fly in the air. Easily a 25 inch brown. As we say, “In the air, Bow down to the trout”. Slack in the line, then tighten up when back in the water. It was an incredible morning.
