Falling Springs, 11/04/23
Victor pulled into my house just before 9AM and we were on the water until 1PM. It was mostly cloudy, 35 degrees which warmed to 61 while a light breeze set in. The water was clear, 52 degrees and we did see midges and some BWO’s hatching and a few rising trout. Victor has been trying to get out fly fishing, but not much time. He wanted to learn how to ready water and what techniques work best. I started Victor out with tandem nymphs off an indicator and next was high-sticking with nymphs. Victor missed two and it was a learning moment. I said it comes with more stream-time, don’t hesitate to set the hook. We switched off to dries when we got on rising trout. I started with a BWO parachute and a dropper and it was refused. I said patience, lets change flies since they were refused. I switched to my Mike’s Midge pupa and BAM, Victor landed his first trout on the fly! It was a nice 10 inch brown. Later we went back to nymphs and he missed one. Then we finished with streamers and he lost a fair rainbow. It was a great winter trout trip. Now packing for Erie to guide Steelhead. I have interest in November 9, but no one has committed yet. You can stay at the Wyndam n Erie and get a discounted room rate with your booking.
