Beaver Kill and Willowemoc, 05/19/23 & 05/20/23
Tracy and I took off Friday morning for am book signing and fly tying event at the best and most famous fly shop in the Catskills. I was at Dette Fly Shop Saturday from 9AM to 3PM. It was a great day and Joe and Kelly are the best. I also want to thank Jim and Mike who came down from Syracuse to hang out for the day. We arrived Friday around noon and I fished for about 90 minutes on the Beaver Kill. The water was cold and clear. Nothing was hatching so I tied on my MH green BH caddis in two colors tandem style. I picked up 2 browns over 15 inches on the green color. Tracy and I went to Rockland house for dinner which was simply amazing! I went back out real quick and the caddis tried to drop but nothing would break the surface. Time for bed.
Next day after leaving Dette’s I hit the Willowemoc. It was clear and cold. I did see a few March Browns but again nothing on the surface. Again with my BH green caddis landed a big net full brown trout and broke one off that was in the low 20 inch range. We all gathered for a great diner and I hit the water once more at the Beaver Kill. There were so many bugs on the water and trout were rising. Not sure what my problem was. Tired, thinking about guides, 4 hour drive home. Still no excuse to miss three trout. I could feel Tracy watching me saying, “Mike, What the Hell”. It still didn’t matter what a great weekend.
