Antietam/ Red Run, 03/27/25
Todd Beasley is a dear friend and guide who wanted to see this water while treating his good buddy Tom to a day of prime trout water. Todd told me, just stay with Tom most of the time. Call Tod if ever interested in Gunpowder trout fishing at 301-526-4911. Well at least the weather folks got the sunny and light winds correct. However, what was to be a 38 degree morning was a chilly 21 degree start. This put the clear and low water temperature back to 39 degrees. We did see some midges from 1PM to around 3PM. I told them we’re still fishing and the water will come to us. We’ll hit the lower property and when it hits 44 degrees we will be all good. Fished most of the day with nymphs and indicators. I did switch off to streamers because nothing was moving for nymphs in the chilly water. Tom moved several over 18 inches and he broke off a huge trout. Todd switched back over to nymphs and guess what. The water reached 44 degrees and he smoked 4 nice rainbows. We ate a very quick lunch after moving upstream. Fished all nymphs rest of the day and it was on. Tom rolled two big trout, landed a rainbow and then a “Welcome to Antietam” wild brown trout. Todd landed a very nice wild brown up on lower Red Run. Crazy to think all the trout in the net ranged from 14 inches into a shade under 20 inches and that is one of the many reason anglers want to fish this pristine trout fishery.
I have this Saturday open if anyone wants to go out in the crazy 80 degree day. I’m booked for other streams in April. Ron Nimitz can guide anyone on April 14-17,26-29. Call me or Ron directly at 717-552-4434..
