Conococheague/Carbaugh Run, 04/20/24
Mike rolled up to my house at 8AM and we fished until 3PM. Mike is new to fly fishing so we headed down to the pond and had a 1 hour casting lesson. Once he was putting t it out 30’ it was time to hit the stream. The “Jig” was still stained and flow was still moving fast. It was 50 degrees and we did see abundant midges and some caddis and craneflies. I started teaching Mike how to fish nymphs off indicators while working on mending the line. It was OK but by lunch he was getting drift which ended up with missed trout and ended up landing a brown. We continued working different beats of water with nymphs as we made our way to the park. We hit Carbaugh real quick for an upstream dry fly lesson. Carbaugh is stained, 49 and pushing a good amount of water for a little stream. I corrected 1 issue and then it was time to stick a few more. Mike ended up missing three more and landed a small native brook trout asnd a chunky brown. It was a great educational day and got Mike into his first fly rod trout. With these cool water and great flows do not be afraid to look into June/July guide dates.
