Big Springs/LeTort 01/04/23

It did not take long for the 2023 guide season to start. Rana has been wanting to get out for a half day with me and the air temperature could not be beat today. All he was wanting was to learn new techniques for the 2023 season. So we spent a lot of time on my mid-air line reach cast, nymphing techniques and streamer tactics. It was 47 warming to 59 degrees as the day progressed. It started to get that overcast which made it look like early evening out with the Low front approaching. We were on the water from 10:30AM to around 3PM. Down on Big Springs the water was clear, 52 and not a thing hatching. I set his rod for double nymph rigs and mine was our streamer rod. Rana had two takes and I went to “lets catch mode”. Still Rana said “No Worries” I’m hear to learn. He handed the rod off to me several times to see how I made different casts and how I work streamer so well in and around the weed beds. And then I missed one. Before we took off to the Letort, he missed two more on nymphs and a fairly nice one on a streamer.

So we fished the LeTort for just about an hour. It was clear and 52 degrees with normal water flow and there were some midges flying around. We hit the stream with streamers as I always do and we fished structures and Rana was wondering how I would approach them. Well it almost paid off. Rana had hooked up with a brown that had my 8’6” Orvis Clearwater bent in half. This was not a small brown trout for sure. I had a great time on the water. If you see a warm winter day, just call a few days ahead of time and we can get on the water for a little winter fly fishing.
