JUNE TROUTING

Come June many fly fishermen start leaning more toward warm water fishing. Well here in South Central PA the trout fishing is far from over. First, we have some of the most famous and many lesser know spring creeks. These spring creeks fish year-round. Second, the South Central PA freestone streams fish deep into summertime. Many of the freestone streams originate deep in the mountain valleys which have cooler air temperatures. These freestone streams also have rich spring creek influences which keep them cool. Add on the the fact that this year the air temps have been cooler than normal, plus we have been receiving adequate rainfall and it adds up to perfect conditions that will keep these South Central PA freestone streams fishing well into summer if the trends continue.

Many fly fishermen believe hatch season is over after the May sulphurs fade away but in fact the streams will continue to see mayflies and caddis and not to mention we will also have craneflies and midges hatching daily. Let’s not forget about the hatch that does not come from the water. These succulent morsels entice so many trout to feed. They come from the land and mistakenly fall into the water. June is when terrestrial season really starts to gear up. South Central PA trout are eagerly awaiting ants, beetles and crickets.

I’m always excited when June fly fishing comes around. South Central PA is blessed with miles and miles of great freestone and spring creeks. It offers a huge variety of fly fishing opportunities. One can find themselves lost in the mountains fishing for native brook trout or fish the over abundant holdover browns and rainbows. Add in that many freestone and spring creeks have both wild rainbows and brown trout and I say what’s not to love about South Central PA trout fishing.

So if you want to get out on the water take a look at your calendar and give me a call. It would be my pleasure to showcase these awesome area streams. You can book your trip directly through the Precision Fly and Tackle website. The site has my up to date calendar, so you can see when I’m available. I also update my stream conditions daily. Peruse through my stream reports which hold valuable information on fly and leader choices for specific streams and steam situations. Trout season has only begun and if you can’t get with me this season, there is always 2024 but dates will fill up fast.
